Job Description: Field Robotics Technician

The Field Robotics Technician will work closely with the Field Team Leads, the Director of Field Services and other team members to perform field work using HELIX robots. This typically involves travel to mine sites in Canada, USA and likely other countries for several days or weeks (in shifts). The Field Robotics Technician is responsible for assisting in the safe deployment and field operations of Copperstone HELIX robots. Copperstone will train the Robotics Technician in safe robot operation procedures; however, a successful candidate will possess strong aptitudes to excel under unpredictable field conditions while collecting samples or data and positively representing Copperstone to our clients. Field work may involve extreme weather and site conditions found across North America.

The Field Robotics Technician needs to be a motivated, enthusiastic team member with a commitment to quality, and success as a team. The ideal candidate is an effective team worker, who listens well, respects diversity of opinions and has an open, clear and succinct communication style. The candidate will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with the HELIX robotic platform, provide support for deployment and recognize, define and improve upon operational procedures. The candidate should be excited to push robots to their limits in the field.

Duties and responsibilities
-Travel to mine sites in Canada, USA and likely other countries for several days or weeks (in shifts).
-Become trained, company-certified, and competent to operate custom robotic platforms and other pieces of equipment, including precision survey and data collection instruments
-Assist robotic field operations in a safe and efficient manner
-Follow company procedures and checklists
-Support the mobilization and demobilization of equipment in hard-to-access and/or remote environments
-Maintain field tool kit, all equipment including trucks, trailers, generators and other various pieces of equipment to ensure optimal performance
-Prepare for field deployments by facilitating packing and ensuring all tools, spares and equipment are packed
-Perform routine diagnostics of robotic platforms before, during, and after deployment
-Perform daily and weekly maintenance and operational checks of the robotic platforms as needed
-Ensure proper knowledge of and strict adherence to all necessary safe operating procedures
-Perform testing to collect data in an accurate and timely manner, compile the collected data, and prepare testing and field reports
-Assist in field operations planning, including travel logistics, site safety, and training
-Actively participate in outdoor field operations and testing of new robots and payloads
-Support and improve deployment of HELIX robotic platforms and recommend additions to safe and efficient practices and procedures
-General up-keep, maintenance and organization of Copperstone facilities
-Optimize policies and procedures documentation
-Build/Possess a working knowledge of of soil mechanics, in-situ testing, and geophysical and bathymetric field investigations/assessments

-Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent
-Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Environmental or Geophysical Sciences or equivalent
-Other field applicable or relevant Diplomas or Certificates will be considered
-Electrical and mechanical skills and knowledge are an asset
-Minimum of 2 years of relevant field experience
-Must possess strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
-Safety tickets are an asset (First Aid, H2S Alive, CSTS, MSHA, etc.)
-Must hold, at minimum, a Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
-Experience driving long distances with a trailer over a variety of terrain is an asset
-Second languages are always an asset
-Must possess a strong work ethic and represent the company in a professional manner at all times in the field
-Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, moving heavy materials up to 50 lbs., climbing, crawling, kneeling, as well as walking on uneven ground, and working long hours in all weather conditions
-Must work well independently or in a team setting with minimal supervision
-Must enjoy working outdoors and traveling for extended periods of time
-Must enjoy performing a wide variety of duties and be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities
-Valid passport and eligibility to travel to the USA for deployments is preferred

-Beneficial competences and experiences:
-Experience with robotic platforms (Drones, aerial surveys, drone operation), utility vehicles or field sampling equipment
-Geotechnical or environmental experience with mining, tailings, or oil sands operations
-Experience with soil, sediment or water sampling
-Experience surveying, GIS, Geoscience, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Bathymetry
-Experience with telecommunications
-Experience working on mine sites, staying in camps/hotels, shift work
-Experience working in extreme weather conditions and remote locations

Work with a growing team of field personnel including other robot operators and technicians reporting to the Director of Field Services. A minimum of weekly communication with the Director, along with more frequent field updates as required. Ongoing, effective communication with the entire Copperstone team is essential to the overall success of the field team and Copperstone as a whole.
