Environmental Manager (remote)

Action Land & Environmental Services Ltd. is a land and environmental consulting firm based in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Our team has been providing land and environmental consulting services to the oil and gas, renewable energy, utilities, and municipality sectors in western Canada for over 20 years. We offer technical expertise in a range of consulting services to solve our clients’ environmental, land and regulatory requirements.

Action Land & Environmental Services Ltd. is seeking an Environmental Manager to oversee a team of 5 to 10 biologists and ecologists based out of the Medicine Hat office. This position can be remote and would involve regular virtual communications with staff and occasional visits to the Medicine Hat office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MANAGEMENT
Communicates effectively with clients and staff from project initiation through to completion.
Accomplishes tasks of the department by assigning work to direct reports (discusses priorities, develops action plans including methodologies, resources needed and timelines).
Ensures adherence to timelines and work performance standards by monitoring workflow processes and performance outcomes of direct reports.
Makes recommendations on staffing needs of Environment department are met through effective hiring, on-boarding, training and terminations, within approved budgets.
Enables direct reports to achieve maximum performance outcomes by providing regular and on-going support and leadership.
Develops competencies of direct reports by identifying training needs and providing/facilitating training to maintain and upgrade skills.
Participates in the overall success of the Company as a member of the Management Team by attending Managers’ Meetings and providing information as requested.

ADMINISTRATION
Ensures accurate completion of environmental reports by conducting final reviews and editing when required.
Advances productivity and quality of reporting by developing report and form templates.
Promotes fair and equitable employment practices while ensuring department needs are met by reviewing attendance records of direct reports and making decisions about time off requests.
Generates estimates and quotes to clients for potential projects.
Prepares invoices for completed projects and reports progress to President.
Ensures safety of team by acting as an on-site safety representative; advises on safety matters; implements safety protocols.

MARKETING:
Supports Vice-President of Corporate Strategy & Development with identifying and capitalizing on market opportunities through third party soliciting and attending industry promotion events.

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS, PROJECTS AND DUTIES AS REQUIRED:
Conducts environmental field assessments and inspection tasks as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Varied background in environmental sciences and environmental management or related field; 10 years of relevant experience preferred.
Professional designation in a related field.
Minimum bachelor’s degree in an environmental science, agronomy or biological science discipline.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Strong leadership skills.
A suitable combination of education and experience may be considered.
